Halloween DIY Pumpkins & Easy Brunch Wear

Donuts are such a hit in our family that they’ve been served at birthday parties instead of cupcakes! On any given Sunday, Daddy will make a run to our favorite donut shop, Christie’s, and bring back an assortment for the family. Chocolate with rainbow sprinkles is of course the kids favorite, Mike loves a chocolate bar, and I can’t wait to gobble up a maple or glazed milk donut! Are y’all wanting a donut now because I am. Haha!

Every year we do all sorts of DIY pumpkin projects. One of my favorite ways to decorate a pumpkin is with paint! It’s so easy and fun. Since Halloween is on a Monday, I decided to host a Halloween themed brunch on Sunday. So when I started thinking about how I wanted to paint my pumpkin(s) this year, I decided on a centerpiece of mini pumpkin donuts! Pretty sure I’ll need to have real ones too, but I think they will make the perfect addition to the table. These are so easy!

You need:

  • 5 mini white pumpkins
  • Pink, brown, and/or white acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Markers

Make sure you clean and dry the pumpkins. Next paint each pumpkin with your chosen color of paint. I went with all pink because I wanted a cohesive look, but mixing up the colors would be cute too. Let them dry. Next, draw on the sprinkles using the markers. I let my kids help with the sprinkles, but if you want to make these look more professional, then handle the sprinkles on your own.

Voila! The cutest centerpiece for a Halloween brunch.

What to wear for a holiday themed brunch? If you don’t love to dress up, or you need something asap, then I’ve got a quick fix for you. I adore this playful shirt and it’s so on trend! Fashion is having a moment with fun printed t-shirts. Paired with a leather skirt or leather pants it’s the perfect outfit for any holiday brunch. You are a bit dressed up without trying too hard! A bit cheeky and a bit sassy. Throw on some cat ears or a headpiece of choice to make it Halloweenish. For an everyday look there are so many ways to mix up a printed tee. Another favorite would be with distressed jeans, a leather jacket, and a colored heel. So fun! My shirt is only $16, so grab it now.

Can’t wait to show y’all our pup’s first Halloween look! I think mom is more excited. Stay tuned..

Easy Halloween Banner

Three Things

One of my favorite places to find great holiday decor is on Etsy. I have a collection of buntings and banners that I hang on my mantel for all sorts of events and holidays. It’s so easy to download the art and have it printed at your local Kinkos. I found an orange and black checkered ribbon to pipe the banner through for an extra punch of Halloween!

This Week’s Toddler Talk

We have some pretty exciting news to share! Yesterday we brought home our 9 week-old french bulldog. We named him, Louie! The kids call him “King Louie”. We are head over heels in love with this sweet boy, and I can’t wait to share some snaps of him soon.

If you are new to this series, then take a look at the first post for some color. I gave each family member a nickname, all in good humor, and to share a bit about their personalities. I adore the funny things kids say, and I found myself documenting our conversations, so it made perfect sense that it become a series on the blog. So, here is This Week’s Toddler Talk.

—> It’s the end of the day, and Audrey is tired. Instead of our usual bath, I want her to take a quick shower, so that we can get ready to go to bed. Audrey isn’t loving this idea, and we are quickly going into meltdown mode. To help prevent toddler tantrums, I invented a “pretend” reset button that the children have on their bodies. When one of the kids get upset, I try to distract he/she, get a little silly, and talk about hitting the reset button. The reset button can be anywhere on their body..this is an important part of my reset button strategy. Often they like to make up a new spot for the reset button, then they pretend to turn it on and off, we all laugh, and voila –> meltdown has been forgotten, and we are back to a happy positive behavior. Anyone else do things like this? I’m guessing yes, and would love to hear what works in your house. Anyhow, the below incident went a little different than I was used to. Here it goes.

Mary Poppins: Audrey, we are going to take a quick shower, because we don’t have time for a bath tonight.

The Devil Wears Spiderman: What? No, I don’t like showers.

Mary Poppins: I know, but we will make it fast. (I undress her and she is starting to yell).

The Devil Wears Spiderman: Mom, you are the worst!!! I don’t like showers!! I want a bath.

Mary Poppins: (Trying to keep my cool, and ignore the approaching meltdown). Hurry up and hop in, Audrey.

The Devil Wears Spiderman: I don’t like this, AHHHHHHHH!!! (lots of yelling, arms thrashing, and boom –> we are in a full-blown tantrum)

Mary Poppins: Audrey, let’s hit the reset button. Where is the reset button today?

The Devil Wears Spiderman: Mom, there is no reset button today!! Get me out of here!!! (more yelling)

Mary Poppins: Come on, let’s change that attitude. Is the reset button here? Here? Should we hit it twice? (trying to be silly).

The Devil Wears Spiderman: Mom!!!!! (she hollers) The reset button is broken. It’s broken forever, and there is no reset button on humans. Stop talking about the reset button, it doesn’t work! Buttons are on toys not kids!! This is annoying!!!!

And just like that, the reset button is retired, and my daughter sounds like a teenager. Truth, I had a slight blow to my mommy ego. I was proud of that distraction strategy, but when your five year-old calls you out, then it’s time to come up with a new strategy. That’s the beauty about children, they keep growing up, and love keeping us on our toes.

—> Jack and I are at the park. Jack has found his competitive side, and ALWAYS has to win.

Cupid: Mom, let’s race! (huge smile)

Mary Poppins: Okay, sounds good.

Cupid: Okay, I’m going to say WEADY (ready), SET, GO, and then we race! (he is so excited)

Mary Poppins: Okay, I’m ready.

Cupid: WEADY, SET, GO!!! (we both start running, and suddenly Jack stops, throws his hands up, and starts yelling). Mommy, you can’t start running right away!

Mary Poppins: Wait, why? You said to race after you yelled, WEADY, SET, GO.

Cupid: (with an annoyed voice) I know, but you have to wait until I run ahead, then you get to go.

Mary Poppins: Oh, okay, I can do that.

Cupid: Okay, let’s do it again. WEADY, SET, GO!!! (I stay back and let him run ahead a bit, then jog slowly catching up to him, but not passing him). NO!!!!!!! Mommy, you can’t come up this close! Stop! (puts both hands straight out, directing me to stop)

Mary Poppins: Jack, are we racing? I was just trying to race with you. (trying not to laugh at his seriousness)

Cupid: Mom, we ARE racing, but you need to walk. I run, okay!?

Mary Poppins: So let me understand? We are racing, but I have to wait a minute to start, you get to run, but I have to walk. Are these the rules?

Cupid: Yes, mommy because that’s how I win. I always win when we race, okay?! Follow the rules, Mommy! (he uses the same tone as I do when I say that to the kids…and I’m trying so hard to keep a straight face)

Mary Poppins: Okay lover, let’s race, and I’m guessing you are going to win. (he smiles big and proud because I understand his rules now, lol)

Beauty Review – J Beverly Hills Products

I often get asked how I do my hair or what products I use. I’ll post a tutorial on styling my hair soon, but for today, let’s focus on products. We all know how great products make a world of difference when styling hair. The whole messy-bed-head-look actually takes work and some great products to achieve. Most people don’t wake up like that, and I certainly don’t. In addition to providing great texture, volume, and shine, I want my products to nourish my hair. Having kids made me take a deeper look into what’s actually in my products. I want my family to be using safe products. Incorporating more natural beauty products that make me feel good about what I’m putting on my body, face, and hair is important (Similar post here –> BeautyCounter) J Beverly Hills uses various botanicals in their line that nourish your hair while still providing excellent volume, texture, hold, and shine. I love that!

My kit included the Intensive Hair & Scalp Masque Treatment, Lift Up Volumizing Spray Foam, Platinum Revive Coconut Oil, Platinum 5 in 1 Styling Emulsion, Fragile Color-Safe Shampoo, Platinum Dry Clean Shampoo. While I loved all the products I want to highlight my favorite four of the bunch. Here we go.

Their Platinum Dry Clean Shampoo is amazing. As a busy mom of two, I use it constantly. With rosemary, tea tree, and lavender, it smells lovely, increases my volume, and soaks up oil. As most dry shampoo, it’s great for the third and fourth day after a wash, but I often use it on the first day wash (like images above) because I like the texture it gives. It messes up the first day curls just enough to keep them from being too perfect.

Masque Hair & Scalp Intensive Treatment. It’s tough to say, but this might be my favorite product sampled. When I use the treatment, I immediately feel like I’m doing something good for my hair. It’s oh-so spa like with its refreshing mint, aloe, and rose scent, and it’s paraben free. My hair was super shiny the next few days and much more hydrated. If you frequently style your hair with a curling iron or flat-iron, then you know the importance of a good masque. This one is amazing.

5 in 1 Styling Emulsion. Anytime I’m straightening or curling my hair, I use about a dime of this product on my hair. It’s great for adding shine and protecting your hair from high heat damage. It has both coconut oil and grapeseed oil. Tip – I start about a third of the way down from my scalp instead of at the roots. My roots already provide enough natural oil.

Lift Up Volumizing Spray Foam (not pictured). I use this after the 5 in 1 Styling Emulsion. It provides excellent volume without feeling like you have a ton of product in your hair. Before I blow dry, I turn my head upside down and spray on the roots near my neck. I work the product in. Then I flip my head back up and spray the volumizer at the top of my roots, working the product in again. My tip – Blow dry your hair upside down for a few minutes for maximum volume.

My experience with J Beverly Hills has been excellent. You can learn more about their distributors, botanicals, and pricing at their website. Wishing you all happy and healthy hair! Products were provided for a glaMoMorous life to review. Results and feedback are 100% mine.

Valentine’s Day in Topshop

VDay_4Aside from my husband, the other two loves in my life, are my messy and silly two toddlers. So, in celebration of Valentine’s Day, we decided on a fun mommy and son photoshoot. Jack who is also nicknamed “little lover” is full of affection and kisses, and it was fun to capture his sweetness. The wind made this day a little hard to shoot, balloons + dresses + wind don’t play well, but it was still loads of fun! I adore a classic silhouette like this cherry red dress by Topshop. It’s both classy and sexy without showing too much skin. The look feels a bit Kate Middleton, which is always a good thing!

These days, what I enjoy most about Valentine’s Day are the sweet and simple acts of love shown by my children. In our house, Valentine’s Day has less to do with expensive flowers or fancy chocolates and more about showing our love with homemade cards, heart-shaped pancakes, and sweet moments talking about how we show love for each other. This year, I decided no fancy Pinterest Valentines cards would be required of my kids. I let them choose exactly what they wanted, so it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Paw Patrol for the win. In all honesty, they were way more excited about these Valentine’s cards than previous years. As we put together their goodies I asked them a question, “Why do you think we make Valentine’s treats to give our friends and family?” Their response went something like this, “We loooove the candy! And… because we love our friends and family.” Their response was exactly what you would expect from two toddlers, but I was happy they understood the holiday represented more than just candy or gifts. Speaking of gifts. When it comes to celebrating this holiday, Mike has always been a romantic at heart. He often surprises me with a bouquet of flowers, a sweet gift, or my favorite chocolates from Teuscher in San Francisco. As much as I appreciate and adore these tokens of love, my favorite gift is a night with just the two of us. Whether we are eating in or dining out, a delicious meal and a shared bottle of wine is my idea of the perfect Valentines! What’s your favorite way to spend the holiday?

 { On me – Topshop dress, Target tassle necklace, Steve Madden heels. On Jack – Gap red striped collar shirt, Janie and Jack trouser and suspender, Livie and Luca shoes, Target bowtie }

Whether you spend this day with friends, family, or that special someone, we wish you a day full of love and laughter!
